itʹs a bit tough, seeing all these folks saying ʹʹiʹve been hiredǃ what am i supposed to do nowʔʹʹ. iʹve been to the job fair the last two years in a row, met some awesome people, made some good contacts. last year, i was hired as an alternate and didnʹt make it down. this year, iʹve got the alternate gig again, and am still waiting back on the results of my interview a couple of weeks back (i figure driving to colorado from sf shows determination, rightʔ). i have bruises all over my arms from the docs drawing blood and missing veins (you still have to pq to be an alternate, whether or not youʹre going). i got turned down for the da spot i applied for (a bit of a blow, i must say, being abjectly turned down for a dishwashing job, but whatever). i guess what iʹm saying is: wish me luck. they said a couple of weeks and iʹd hear back. iʹm calling tomorrow because itʹs been a little while. please disreguard whatever pathetic sound this post may have. if i donʹt make it this year, itʹs back to the job fair next.cheersJune 14, 2009 at 6:58 am #8958
nope, no pity parties here. two years to get employed is about par.you went for daʔ and you were originally going for an it position, rightʔ oyǃ what job are you an alternate forʔhereʹs a story…i have a good friend who really wanted a job on the ice. she was turned down the first year, but got the name of a hiring manager. all that year, everytime she went somewhere, sheʹd write a postcard to him. ʹʹhaving a great time in montana. would really like a job…ʹʹ by the next year he couldnʹt take it any more, so he hired her over the phone — as a janitor. at the pre-deployment orientation meeting he called her name to find out who she was. she stood, and he held up a thick stack of post cards: he had kept all of them.she worked two years as a janitor, then two years as a hovercraft driver (this was quite some time ago). she went on to become one of the best ice core drillers on the continent. i met her last summer in mcmurdo when she was headed out to the dry valleys as a grantee to drill more cores.keep at it…June 14, 2009 at 6:58 am #8959
thanks, truly, for the lack of pity. it was late at night, and i didnʹt really mean it like it sounded, just venting some frustration.iʹve been doing more or less as your friend did (only sans postcards). it still looks pretty good for me this season.June 14, 2009 at 6:58 am #8960
two years in a row as an alternate, almost puts you in as one of us. keep up the gentle phone calls. and keep at it. donʹt be a pest, but make sure they know you by name. the post card thing is just another way of making sure they know who you are. if you donʹt get it, next year play up the two time alternate thing. tell them itʹs time to hire you and put the other person down as an alternate. what position are you an alternate forʔJune 14, 2009 at 6:58 am #8961
well two years now officially as an alternate. in my last post everything was looking good. i found out today via impersonal form letter (more or less) that the other position i was waiting on was hired out to someone else. i still have the alternate gig though. iʹm an alternate for crary lab it, as i was last year. was waiting on a spot in town proper. i canʹt help but be a bit disappointed. not entirely because of the rejection, mostly for its manner. i drove to colorado from san francisco for my interview (mostly because i had a road trip planned anyway) because i thought face to face meant more sense than on the phone. to receive a ʹʹthank you for your interest in raytheon polar services company etc etcʹʹ after that just hurt a bit, you knowʔi feel better having heard from my hiring contact for the alternate spot though, she said ʹʹit ainʹt over till itʹs over, and i promise not to give up the fight on this endʹʹ long live kj, thatʹs all i have to say.i hope using actual names is not somehow taboo, but i feel it had to be said.[probably not a good idea. i changed it to initials. — kp]June 14, 2009 at 6:58 am #8962
