according to the english newspaper the guardian (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/antiwar/story/0,12809,894460,00.html ) there will be a peace rally at the mcmurdo base this coming weekend (feb 15-16, 2003). aside from the fact that this is a woderful piece of solidarity on behalf of the people working in antarctica, i’m also interested because i am a member of an yahoo internet group called “leftist trainspotters”–we are mostly people who discuss the history of left groups in the world. we come from all continents (except antarctica!), speak many languages and have very diverse political backgrounds. one activity we report on is the participation of different groups and organisations at rallies. this is much like traditional trainspotters, but instead of trains we pursue left parties. if somebody can post some pictures or provide a report it will be of enormous satisfaction to us.
in peace and solidarity,

This is the first I’ve heard of a peace rally. I wonder where they newspaper got it’s info? Although I’m on night shift right now and am not in complete touch with the day world. We had one a month or so ago. Everyone who wanted to participate went on the ice and formed a giant peace sign.
If there is a rally, I’m pretty sure I know who would be behind it. I’m a bit or right winger or at least that’s the position I take when the lefties start the discussions. Sort of the Devils Advocate. I’ll have to see if I can find some more info. I’ll let you know.

thanks for the quick reply. if you want you can ask your colleague to email me. fyi–there was a rally in melbourne, australia, this evening (friday), the first one of a weekend of rallies in australia (and around the world) in opposition to a war against iraq. there were between 200,000 and 250,000 people–it is believed to be the largest protest in melbourne’s history.

As one of the above mentioned friends said, this is a case of the newpapers causing the event. There never was a rally scheduled here but since it was reported in the newspapers a small group of people held the rally yesterday. I don’t have any photos at the moment.
