Robb, WB8BHU/qrp here. I left a message on the General board?? under Radio Logs- McMurdo.. Did you see it? I wonder if you remember our QRP Qso when you were 50 miles NE of Tahiti..Ke6ZYK/mm? I was running 7 watts. My wife,Barbara, and I are now retired from teaching, but still appreciative of your letting our classroom students follow you to NZ and on to McMurdo. I never saw such interest on the part of students ann parents!
Check out the message on the general board. Say hi to Lorie.
Best wishes for the New Year.

Of course I remember you. That was a pretty exciting time for me and you were a definite part of keeping us safe on that sailing trip. We are in the middle of the solar minimum and ham radio HF is less than optimal. We have a broken antenna, but are working on getting it fixed. My current interest is PSK. Not having much luck at 100W, but will keep trying. Also playing with Slow scan television over HF. We are set up and ready to go with power if we can get the antenna repaired. We’ll keep in touch.

It has been a long time since we got a chance to talk. Glad to hear that you and Lorie are well and living the life of luxury in McMurdo. Sorry to hear about the 10 meter ant problem, but with the present HF conditions, I guess it doesn’t matter much. Interesting that you are getting into PSK. I have been reading up on the digital modes and hope I can absorb enough to actually try something out. Anyway, the qrp seems to be a wash now. I haven’t made a 20 meter contact with 7 watts, for over a year. Sure hope the sunspots start doing their thing before too long.
I would still like to qsl our qso from back in May of 97. It was very memorable to me. I still am amazed that my 7 watts out to a dipole made it out to you near Tahiti! Do you still have the logs from those days , Mike, or were they lost? If not, I have the log data and a bit of the QSO on cassette tape. (old technology!)
Will you and Lorie be wintering over again? If so, will you get back to the states before winter sets in?
Hmmmm, Icestock in the snow! Guess I need to do a bit more reading of these discussion posts. I seem to be missing some of the finer points… Anyway, take care Mike. It was great hearing from you! Hope you and Lorie had a Merry Christmas and that your New Year will be Safe, Prosperous and Happy!

Rob, Don’t know if the logs are intact or not. It’s been 11 years. I don’t know if you heard, but on the first day into Tahiti, we drug anchor and washed ashore in a storm. Escapade sank in the surf with us aboard. It was a hairy night. I rescued a lot of papers, washed them with fresh water and sent them home. They’ve been in a storage shed since. I have no idea if the ham logs made it. I haven’t got a qso, card. Wait till I get home in March and remind me. I’ll print something up on the home computer and send it to you. Home email is
The hf radio got submerged in the sinking. I rinsed it out also, but I think it’s probably dead as well. Haven’t used it since. For PSK, I bought a rigblaster. I hooked it up hear last week and it seems to do ok. I just need some propagation. If you get hooked up let me know and we’ll try a sked.

Will do.. Glad to hear you will get home in March. Are you going back to McMurdo for the winter? If you like, I will mail a cassette of some of your May 29th 1997 ham qso’s to your QRZ.com, Calif address so it will be waiting for you. Or, if you have a different address, let me know. I think there might even be a phone patch home on that tape.
Yes, I have all the details on the Escapade mishap.. I have read all of the online material and Barbara and I kept tabs on you and Lorie when you hitched rides to NZ , the National Parks days, and beginning of Antarctica… My classroom had a large blown up photo of “Justin Case” which was a star attraction to the 5th grade “big wheel” fans. You might say, This is your life, Mike.. We know it all! hi!!
If I can get anything going on digital modes I’ll let you know. I just wish we could get some improvement in propagation before too long. I did notice 20 open to South Africa about 3:30 pm EST on Saturday, so there is some hope on the horizon.
Thanks for keeping in touch, Mike. I will continue to read these discussion boards, and will pop in from time to time. My very best to you and Lorie. Stay safe.
