I’m another person looking for work in Antarctica. I bet ye get people trying to find advice on this topic all the time on this message board, but its hard to find info on the net so any advice would be really appreciated. I got finished a Geology degree in Ireland last year and have been working as a geologist in Australia since then. I realize I’m not an experienced enough to work in Antarctica as a geo, I recon my best bet would be on a cruise ship. anyone have any advice? ideas?

OK, first, where in the ould sod? Baile Atha Cliath? Lucky is Ainm Do. A Chairde.
I think its more NSF than RPSC for that craic really now. I wish you all the best but its late in the season and it looks liek you are trying to tag on with one of the beeker groups.
Keep it up though, looks like you might be the sole Eireneach if making it this season. Keep in touch, Slan leat agus go Raibh maith agat.

Ta se fior – ta eireaneach ar fud an domhain.
Daithi is anim dom – o Sligeach
Got a soft spot for Co. Clare myself – particularly scarrif.
So what are my options for visiting antarctica without having to rob a bank? Any chance of being able to use my degree over there? – I know that mining is not allowed over there (damn right too) but what about research etc. What did you lads do over there?

There are almost no paid geologist positions at McMurdo. We do have a GIS position. There is however a ton of geological work being done by the science groups. Since we don’t have rain there is a minimum amount of erosion, so whereever rocks are exposed, it’s a goldmine for the geologists. Write to NSF or follow the links at http://www.polar.org to see if you can find any info on which universities are sending people down. The Brits , Kiwi’s and the Aussies also have antarctic bases and do similar research. Not having a science oriented job down here leaves me at a disadvantage in pointing you in the right direction. If you don’t have any luck, write back and we’ll do some digging.
You’ll have to get cracking soon as the science groups are probably in their planning stages by now for the next season.

Are you guys wintering over???? I am going to be an alternate for winter this year.
June 19, 2005 at 10:29 pm #2532Marshak2Member
I see you’re working in supply this upcoming season too. I also have an alternate winter contract that I’m quite excited about. Are you the same Susan that went on the Room with a View boondoggle with me late January – and did you live in 211? I think I know you but not sure! I’ll be working in VMF. – Marsha KendallJune 20, 2005 at 7:52 am #2533thepooles98Keymaster
Lorie and I both are wintering. We had the solstice day off on Saturday with a dinner and dance to go along with it . The real solstice is tomorrow at 6 43 pm. We’ll have to do something to celebrate. The winter Polar Plunge is next weekend. Don’t think I’ll be doing that again. We’ll be leaving in October, so should have a chance to see you during the turnover. Are you back at Crary?.
mikeJune 21, 2005 at 11:50 am #2534
Yes, I lived in 211 but, I did not get a boondoggle. I lived on the 2nd floor and spent quite a bit of time in front of the TV in the lounge. I worked at Crary in Supply.
A friend of mine, Jeff worked in VMF last year. Wasn’t Eric his roommate? Bldg 155?
I will be working at the SSC in the MEC. I am looking forward to a good season.
Talk to you later, Susan

Greetings from Palmer. Good to see you’re still out there. Hope you have a good season next year — and get to winter!

You could always try for the science tech position at McMurdo. I’m not exactly sure what they look for though. It’s a year long Raytheon contract based out of Crary Lab.July 2, 2005 at 8:11 am #2538SciencetechKeymaster
Science tech at McMurdo requires a background in physics and skill with all kinds of computers. I won’t go into details here, but anyone interested can write to me:

Christ on a bike, sorry, been busy and haven’t been to the threads in a bit.
A Chairde anyhows. Clare and Sligo are great but Dublins best and outside there, Westport was the craic.
Hope yez get down there, need a few more responsible people like ourselves on the Ice to keep things in order as we’re known for. Until then get yourselves to myspace.com and have a laugh in the Irish groups there, craics 90.

NOW I know who you are! I’m so glad you are coming back! I’ve asked to live in 211 2nd floor again (love that taj mahal sized bathroom). I have pq’d & will call Denver Tuesday to schedule my psyche eval….yes, Jeff was Eric’s roommate. I’ve corresponded with them each a bit since I’ve been back…Eric is coming back but not Jeff…
see you on the Ice!
