I’m going to apply for a cooking job this coming summer season, but I’m wondering if there are any current kitchen staff on the board that I could exchange emails with to find out more about the actual environment than the little bit I’ve been able to gather from online info.
Is there anyone who could help me find out some of the details?
I’ve never worked in the kitchen, but know people who have at all three stations. And like most ice jobs, I’m sure there’s things people like and don’t like about the job. Some of the people I know who worked at all three stations, say they would never go back to work in the McMurdo kitchen again after getting to work at Pole and Palmer, but that’s their opinion.
There’s so many variables with working in the kitchen, like what station and/or field camp will you be working at, what shift will you be working, what will your job be (Sous Chef, Production Cook, Production Baker, etc.). There are a few current blogs of people cooking now on the ice, you can check them out if you haven’t already and maybe get an idea of what you’ll be getting into.
