This evenings recreation adventure trip took us to a place called the “2nd
    Crater”

Normally this location is forbidden to enter but we had special permission
    to hike to the summit.

This location is a few miles from Mt. Erebus, and about 10 miles outside of
McMurdo is a perfect volcanic crater. In the middle is a melt pool of icy
blue glacial ice, After about a 1 mile hike each way we reached the summit,
the GPS said it was 925 ft above sea level. We also discovered an old US
Navy marker up there, its similar to a USGS “benchmark” but this one points
the direction of north instead of showing the altitude.

The view was awesome and seeing the sun set across Mt. Erebus was
amazing…. i would have taken more pictures but my camera froze.. so did my
water bottle full of fruit punch, i tried to keep it warm and had it inside
my backpack in a thick wool sock and it still froze.. but now i have a great
    slushie!!

The picture with me in it, the big mountain in the back is Mt. Erebus, our
    active volcano.

    Here are a few pics…

    Cheers
    Chris
